Modesto, CA – An arrest was made in a shooting and high speed collision homicide case that left a juvenile dead.

On August 19, 2016 at approximately 2:20 a.m., dispatch received a report of multiple shots fired in the area of Prescott Road and W. Rumble Road. Shortly after, additional calls came in reporting a collision at Prescott and Mt. Vernon, after what sounded like vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed.

Officers and emergency personnel responded and located a 1998 Honda Civic, with catastrophic damage, on the west side of Prescott, south of Mt. Vernon. During the investigation, officers found that the vehicle was stolen and appeared to have been struck by gunfire.

Officers located the driver, a 17-year-old male Modesto resident, who appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle. Life-saving efforts were attempted; however, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. During the autopsy it was determined the victim had a gunshot wound in addition to the injuries sustained from the collision.

Detectives served a search warrant in October on Alta Way in Modesto and another search warrant on Jade Place last week in Manteca in connection with the homicide. No arrests were made during the search warrants; however, an arrest warrant for murder was issued for 33-year-old Scott Bates, Jr. Today, officers saw Bates on McHenry Avenue and took him into custody.
