Killer of McClain Co. Man Sentenced to Life without Parole

A decade after a McClain County man was found dead inside his home, a jury found his killer guilty and sentenced him to life without parole. Seventy-four-year-old Burney Ray Bounds was found dead on his bedroom floor. He had been bound with duct tape and strangled with a belt. Crime scene investigators recovered a hair near Bounds’ body, several fingerprints and a palm print on the duct tape. However, when OSBI criminalists submitted the evidence into nationwide databases, no matches were made. For years, OSBI agents and local law enforcement hunted for Bounds’ killer until DNA, fingerprints, and a palm print were matched to Howard Mason Junior (d.o.b. 3/22/1960). With a first degree murder warrant in hand, OSBI special agents flew to El Paso, Texas, where they arrested Mason. The jury began hearing the evidence February 27. Today, the jury convicted Mason of first degree murder and sentenced to him to life without parole.
