Public Service Days begin March 6

Extended program means more weeks of efficient services, like street sweeping

Public Service Days will go into effect the week of March 6 this year, following an extension of the season that was approved by the City Council in the fall. They will last through Dec. 15.

Residents should remove their parked vehicle from the street on their regular trash day, starting on Monday, March 6. Parked vehicles must stay off the street from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m., even if trash is picked up before 4 p.m. Other services, like street sweeping, could still take place until 4 p.m.

Vehicles parked on the street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during a neighborhood’s Public Service Day/trash day are subject to tickets

The extension of Public Service Days from early March through mid-December was meant to better align the no-parking dates to other City services, including yard waste and loose leaf collection schedules.

Changing weather patterns also mean other services, such as street sweeping and road repair, could be done earlier and later in the year. Public Service Days had previously been in effect from April through November.

Because of the change of dates this year, there will be an education period between early March and early April. New signs with the new no-parking dates are currently being installed in neighborhoods across the city, and once the signs are up, the Public Service Days parking rules will be enforced.

Public Service Days permit more efficient and safe collection of trash, recyclables and yard waste and allow crews to better manage other work such as road repair, tree trimming, and sewer and catch basin maintenance.

“Residents across the city pay for services with their taxes and they deserve to have them delivered in their neighborhoods in a thorough and effective manner,” Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. said. “Keeping parked cars off the streets gives us that chance.”
