Advisory

Beware of the "Grandparent Scam" coming around again

We received a report today of an elderly resident getting a call from a person claiming to be her grandson. He stated that he had been arrested for a drug offense and needed $4,000 sent to him ASAP.

The person who received the call, immediately recognized this as a scam, so played along for a while. A different male suspect, claiming to be Officer Steven Williams, got on the phone and gave instructions about getting the necessary cash cards from Wal Mart. He then gave a phone number to be called when the cards were in hand. If someone had fallen for the scam, the subsequent call would be to get the required numbers off the cards to give the scammers access to the money.

This is a very common scam with numerous variations. It is very common and unfortunately victimizes many. Like any scam targeting the elderly, awareness of the scam is key to preventing it. Please pass this post far and wide to help prevent future victimization.

Thank You
