At 6:30am, this morning, the San Leandro Police Department received a call from Alameda County Industries (A.C.I.), 610 Aladdin Avenue, regarding a suspicious item located on one of their conveyer belts.  The item was described as a hand grenade, which was confirmed once our personnel arrived at the business.  The building was immediately evacuated for safety reasons and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department Explosive Ordnance Disposal (E.O.D.) Unit was contacted.
 
610 Aladdin Avenue is situated in such a way that no other businesses were threatened so no other evacuations were necessary.
 
The object located at A.C.I. was deemed to be inert by Alameda County’s E.O.D. personnel.  They took custody of it and the evacuation status has been lifted.
 
Sergeant Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department said, “We see a lot of WW2 era grenades that are commonly marketed as novelty items. People often find these items while going through property of deceased veterans and relatives. Most the time these grenades are inert, however on occasion, we find live explosives. Citizens who encounter hand grenades, munitions and other types of ordnance should call their local police department. The bomb squad will respond and make sure they are safe.”  Sergeant Kelly went on to say, “People should not feel afraid or think they are going to get in trouble for reporting these items. It's a matter of public safety and we are more than happy to come and take a look. If people find these items we ask that they do not handle them. They should move to a safe area and call police.”
