Message from Torrance Fire Department Re: Refinery

The following is being posted on behalf of the Torrance Fire Department:

On 2/18/17 at 06:00 am the Torrance Police Department and 36 firefighters from the Torrance Fire Department responded the Torrance Refining Company for a reported fire and explosion. Fire crews deployed fixed water monitors and knocked down the fire in approximately 30 minutes. Del Amo Blvd Barriers were activated for a brief time to redirect traffic; however, traffic is now open. 


All safety systems at the refinery operated properly and all personnel are safe and accounted for, with no injuries or offsite impact.

The incident has been reported to appropriate agencies including the South Coast Air Quality Management District, California Office of Emergency Services

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.

Other than the affected unit, the refinery continues to operate.
