Sheriff’s Office Releases More Details in Newman PD Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

Newman, CA – A multi-agency investigation continues for an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday morning in Newman, CA.

At about 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Newman Police Department officers responded to a 911 call in the 400 Block of Bobolink Road in Newman, CA for a domestic dispute that escalated to a fight with a weapon. When officers arrived to the residence they found 55 year-old Mauro Garnica of Newman standing over the victim in the front yard attacking her with a weapon. One of the officers deployed his department firearm, striking Garnica. Garnica was transported to the emergency room where he later died. The victim was treated at the scene from the injuries she received during the domestic dispute.

The officer has been identified as Edgar Lopez an 8 year veteran of Newman Police Department. Lopez has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure with all officer-involved shootings. This is the first officer-involved shooting at Newman Police Department since September 1998.

Three separate and independent investigations have been launched into this incident. The Sheriff’s Office was requested by Newman Police department to conduct a criminal and administrative investigation. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the incident.

Newman, CA – A multi-agency investigation is currently under way for an officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning in the 400 Block of Bobolink Road in Newman, CA. The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the criminal and administrative investigations at the request of the Newman Police Department.

Preliminary investigation shows that on 02-15-17 at about 8:40 a.m., Newman Police Department officers responded to a 911 call in the 400 Block of Bobolink Road in Newman, CA for a fight with weapons. Shortly after arriving to the residence officers advised their radio communications center that shots had been fired. A male suspect was struck by officer gunfire and he was transported to the emergency room where he later died. A female victim was treated for injuries at the scene.

Detectives are in the preliminary stages of their investigation processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses. The name of the officer, suspect and victim are not being released at this time. The officer involved in this incident has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. This is the first officer involved shooting at Newman Police Department since September 1998.
