Escaped inmate arrested after Fremont Police K9 locates him hiding in a garage.

On February 16, 2017, members of the Fremont Police Department Special Investigations Unit (SIU) located and arrested wanted fugitive Shawn New (27 years old) in a residence in the 34000 block of Heather Terrace.

New was wanted for escaping from Kentucky Deputies, in handcuffs, on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 in the Hayward area.  Kentucky Deputies were transporting him at the time from Santa Rita Jail to the San Francisco Airport for a warrant from their state.  His escape prompted a large scale search on I880 in Hayward.

Members of Fremont’s SIU identified New as he walked into a residence on Heather Terrace.  Additional officers and a K9 unit were called to assist.  Investigators then obtained an arrest warrant for the residence.

Shortly after, officers made contact with several residents who confirmed that New was within residence.  Despite numerous warnings, New refused to exit the house.  A K9 was sent into the residence and apprehended New who was hiding in the garage.

New was transported to a local hospital for medical attention for a dog bite and was booked at Santa Rita Jail.
