Advisory

This is a Criminal Activity Alert from the Saddle River Police Department.

ALERT !
This morning a resident from the High Ridge section of Saddle River reported that two vehicles were stolen from their driveway. During the night, unknown actors entered the driveway and stole the vehicles. The vehicles were left unlocked with the key fobs inside the vehicles.

Saddle River and several other surrounding communities have recently experienced auto thefts. These vehicles were taken from the driveways of the victims. All of the vehicles that were stolen have had the keys or key fobs left in the vehicles. Many modern vehicles use proximity keys, or keys which don't need to be in the ignition (FOB’s) to turn on the engine. We have seen a dramatic increase of automobile thefts in the surrounding area which are facilitated by residents who keep their keys inside the vehicle when parked. As a matter of practice, always lock your car doors and keep valuables (GPS, purse, wallet, etc.) out of view. Remove all keys and key fobs from your vehicles.

These criminals and their assistants will continue to come to our communities if they are successful at stealing cars. Patrol Officers have made contact with and arrested some of these actors during their shifts. We strongly advise residents not to confront these individuals.

The following tips may reduce your chances of becoming a victim;
 If you have an alarm system, update it, and use it.
 Second story windows should be alarmed.
 Leave interior and exterior lights on to make your home appear occupied.
 Leave a television or radio on inside your home.
 Please remove jewelry and valuables from the bedrooms and closets.
 Remove safes from the master bedroom and their closets.
 Lock all doors and windows. We find many unlocked doors.
 Lock any unoccupied vehicles and remove the key fobs from them.
 Remove mail and newspapers from your driveway the day they are delivered.
 Secure any ladders on your property.
 Lock any unoccupied vehicles and remove the key fobs from them.
