UPDATE ON WEATHER AND INFORMATION RESOURCES

CURRENT FORECAST

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 4 am to 4 pm Thursday for eastern Monmouth County.

Rain will start tonight between 1 am and 3 am, and turn to snow between 4 am and 6 am. The snow will fall at a heavy rate through 10 am on Thursday morning. Snowfall is estimated to end between 11 am and 1 pm.

Near-blizzard conditions will be present during the heaviest snowfall periods. Northerly winds will increase and become gusty, and there is some chance of thunder and lighting.

Snow accumulation for coastal Monmouth County is estimated at between 6 to 10 inches. Ice and snow will make road conditions dangerous for most of Thursday morning.

Heavy and wet snow could lead to downed trees and power lines, and make shoveling difficult.

PARKING

When possible, park vehicles off-street in driveways prior to and during winter storms.

Coastal flooding may occur as a result of the storm. Do not park your car on the lake side of roads by Wesley, Sunset, or Deal lakes. If you live in a low-lying area, move your car to higher ground.

After snowfall has ended on Thursday, park on the odd-numbered side of the road. On Friday, park on the even-numbered side of the road

Alternate side parking rules do not apply in areas that are marked for no parking in snow emergency. Please refer to the 'Alternate Side/No Parking' Legend HERE (or in some cases street signage) for parking rules after Friday.

On one-way streets, park on the left hand side of streets as you face the direction of traffic flow (east side for south bound, west side for north bound). This will make it easier for plows to operate on the narrow streets such as Bond, Emory, Heck, Bergh and Webb.

With a large snowfall, it will take some time before the plows can get to all the streets. Please contact Public Works at 732-775-0900 with plowing questions. Staff will be out plowing so you might not receive an immediate call back.

SAFETY GUIDELINES

This storm will bring high winds. Secure your property. Put away outdoor decorations and other items that could be affected by high winds and heavy precipitation. Clear any debris away from storm drains, allowing water to flow properly.

Snow and ice should be removed for all exit ways, doors and fire escapes. All Fire Department connections must be cleared of snow and ice. If a fire hydrant is on your property, help out the Fire Department by clearing snow from the immediate area around it.

Sidewalks must be cleared by 12 hours after the end of snowfall. Take your time shoveling, and stay wrapped up in layers when outside. Do not shovel snow or aim snowblowers on to the street. Place snow up on the curb out of street lines to prevent it from being plowed back into your driveway.

After the storm has passed, check in on elderly or disabled neighbors.

Keep your cell phone fully charged and plugged in. Assemble an emergency kit (includes batteries, a flashlight, radio, first-aid medications, food and water to last three or more days, can opener, cooking tools, hand sanitizers, and toiletries), and know your emergency plan in case of evacuation.

In the case of a power outage:
  • Unplug or turn off all lights and appliances, to prevent a circuit overload when the power comes back. Leave one light on and plugged in, in order to tell when the power is back.
  • Do not use candles as a light source. Make sure that you have enough spare batteries for flashlights, lanterns, etc.
  • If you have a generator, do not have it running from inside your house.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible, to keep food from spoiling for as long as possible.
  • Do not use your gas oven to warm your house.
  • Turn on faucets to keep your pipes from freezing.

PETS AND STRAYS

During a winter storm, if you see an injured or stranded animal that needs help, contact your local animal shelter or the Monmouth County SPCA

Please remember that homeless animals are in need of food during storm conditions. A bowl of food or unfrozen water can aid them in survival until conditions improve.

When making plans in case of an evacuation, be sure to plan for and bring along your pet.
