Advisory

Larceny of/from Vehicles - Reduce your risk of being a victim

Recently the Muskegon Public Safety Office put out information in reference to locking cars as a measure to reduce your risk of becoming the victim of theft of items taken from your vehicle.

To follow up on that we went back to the Larceny From Vehicle offenses from last year (2016) and looked at the three months with the most of these offenses. When you total those together the vehicles were left unsecured (either unlocked and/or windows left down) in 55% of those cases. Individually for those three months the percentages were 51%, 57% and 58%. On top of this, leaving your keys in the ignition increases your risk of not only having items taken from your vehicle but the entire vehicle being taken.

We encourage residents to take these simple precautions to make your vehicle look like less of an easy target for criminals who obviously are not looking to get caught and want targets where they can get to and commit their crime quickly and then leave.
