As tax season approaches beware of these common tax scams

Tax return time is fast approaching and the Torrance Police Department would like citizens to be aware of common tax scams.

Fraudulent Tax Returns:

Suspects can file made-up tax returns using victim’s Social Security numbers and other personal information.  The suspects will use this information to request a refund.  Most victims don't realize they have been victimized until they attempt to file their own refund. This type of fraud is difficult to prevent.

The IRS offers the following tips to help safeguard your information:

Don’t carry your Social Security card with you

Only give out your Social Security Number if it is absolutely necessary

Check your credit report regularly

Look over your Social Security report each year (www.ssa.gov)

Use updated antivirus software

Phone Scams:

Suspects often call victims claiming to work for the IRS.  The suspects will tell the victims that they owe money and must immediately pay using a wire transfer or prepaid cards.  The suspects are very convincing, threatening and demand immediate payment.

The IRS website states the following:

IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone.

IRS never insists that taxpayers use a specific payment method to pay tax obligations

IRS never requests immediate payment over the telephone and will not take enforcement action immediately following a phone conversation. Taxpayers usually receive prior notification of IRS enforcement action involving IRS tax liens or levies.
