Heidelberg Twp. is a Little Greener Because of Adopt A Highway

This past weekend, our department was involved in “trash pickin’“ along our designated “Adopt A Highway” roadway which is Moulstown Road in Heidelberg Twp. Our volunteers collected 15 bags of garbage and three (3) large car parts. The most concerning items in the trash gathering efforts were hypodermic needles which are apparently discarded by motorists and the most unusual are personal items of clothing .

The department looks for community projects to volunteer our time and decided to get involved in this PennDOT program because this stretch of roadway has sharp and hidden curves. It would make it very treacherous for a resident to pick trash along this road. Instead, we use our police resources to slow or redirect traffic for short periods in order to safely clear the shoulders of the road from garbage.

The Southwestern Regional Police has been involved in PennDOT’s “Roadside Beautification Program”, also known as “Adopt A Highway” for the past eight 8 years. If you or your organization have interest in securing your own stretch of highway, see the following website for additional information.
