Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are assisting California Highway Patrol (CHP), West Los Angeles area with investigating the circumstances surrounding an Officer-Involved Shooting. The incident occurred on Monday, February 6, 2017, at 12:20 a.m. on the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica.

Detectives have learned that CHP responded to the eastbound 10 Freeway at Centinela Boulevard regarding a male on the freeway.  When they arrived at the location, they observed a male on the eastbound lanes of traffic near the center median armed with a knife. The male ran southbound through the traffic lanes and off the freeway embankment which led off the freeway to Pico Boulevard.  As the male continued running, he ran back on the freeway then southbound off the freeway back onto Pico Boulevard.

The male suspect, who was armed with a knife, ran between commercial buildings directly towards the CHP officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect, male Black, adult, was struck by the officer’s gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Neither of the officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire.

The weapon was recovered at the scene.

There is no further information at this time.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are en route to the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, to assist California Highway Patrol (CHP) personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an Officer-Involved shooting.
 
The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
 
No officers were injured during the incident.
 
The investigation is on-going and there is no additional information available at this time.
