2 Recent Residential Burglaries:
- 400 BLOCK OF TUSTIN AVE (17-896)
Occurred on: 2/1/2017 at 10:03 p.m.
An unknown suspect entered the victim’s home through an unlocked door that leads from the backyard into the garage and then a second unlocked door that leads from the garage into the home. Once inside, the suspect went through items in a downstairs guest bedroom and office. The suspect then went to the living room and started opening cabinets. At that point the victim, who had been upstairs asleep, was now awake after hearing thumping noises and what sounded like items being moved downstairs. The victim got up and went to investigate. As he walked out of his room and onto the upstairs landing, he saw a man shining a flashlight in the dining room. The victim immediately yelled at the suspect to get out of his house and the suspect fled back out the way he came.
The victim called police and as one of the police officers was arriving he observed a small metal dolly cart in the roadway on El Modena Ave. The dolly had been removed from the victim’s home and most likely was used to transport a heavy coin collection.
Loss: Coin Collection
Suspect Information: Male, possibly 30 to 40 yrs, 6’tall, heavy build wearing a long sleeve navy blue shirt and unknown color pants.
- 500 BLOCK OF SANTA ANA AVE (17-574)
Occurred on: 1/20/2017 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Unknown suspect entered the victim’s home possibly through an unlocked set of French doors located in the master bedroom. Once inside, the suspect went to a second bedroom and removed the listed items before fleeing. The victim was at work during the time of the burglary.
Loss: Jewelry, Macbook and an iPad.
Suspect Information: None seen or heard.
3 Recent Garage Burglaries:
- 2800 BLK OF BROAD ST (17-799)
Reported: 1/29/2017 at 10:24 a.m.
Suspect cut the hasp lock that secured the large overhead garage door.
Loss: Umbrella, fishing poles (3), oriental carpet, tools, “Radio” wagon, clothing, Christmas decorations and US Currency.
- 400 BLK OF REDLANDS AVE (17-635)
Reported: 1/23/2017 at 9:45 a.m.
Suspect entered an unlocked gate and then the victim’s unlocked garage. Once inside the garage the suspect spray painted the garage windows so that no one could see inside.
Loss: Garage remote and spare keys.
- 500 BLK OF SANTA ANA AVE (17-557)
Reported: 1/20/2017 at 3:09 p.m.
Suspect entered an unlocked side gate and then pried open a rear pedestrian door leading into the garage.
Loss: US Currency and a garage remote

Home Security Tips
- Always lock your windows and doors when you go out, even if for only a few minutes.
- If you return home and find your pedestrian door that leads into your home locked, and you are certain that you left it unlocked, DO NOT GO INSIDE!
- Call 9-1-1 ~ Burglars often lock this door to slow down a victim, allowing the burglar extra time to get out of the home before the resident enters.
- If your home is equipped with an alarm, always activate it even if you’re only going out for a short walk.
- Consider adding a motion sensor in your master bedroom/bathroom, which will activate the alarm if someone comes in through a glass window or door without opening it.
- Always keep your front and rear porch lights on from dusk to dawn and use motion detector lighting along the sides of your home or areas with little foot traffic.
- Use timers on indoor lamps to give the appearance that you are home.
- Adjust window coverings for optimal privacy while maintaining good visibility outside.
- If your garage door has a remote shutoff button on the wall-mounted control, located in the garage, consider locking the door nightly. This will prevent your garage door from being opened remotely.
- If you have a safe, make sure that it is properly bolted to concrete so that it cannot be easily removed.
- Always close and lock your safe and never leave a key or combination out or in an easy to find location (i.e. office, nightstand, etc).
- When you leave on vacation, remember to call the Police Department for a “Vacation Check” 949-644-3681 or sign-up online at www.nbpd.org. Also, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your newspaper and mail while you are away.
