On February 3rd, 2017 at about 7:27 am, Kern County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a subject possibly in possession of a handgun on a property in the 300 block of Park Dr., about one block south of Foothill High School, in east Bakersfield.
As deputies arrived on scene they received information that the suspect, later identified as 27 year old Carlos Velasquez, had fled the area on foot. Deputies began searching the area and at one point Velasquez was seen running onto a property in the 5600 block of Eucalyptus Drive, where deputies lost sight of him.
Deputies began searching the property where Velasquez had last been seen, and with assistance from a Bakersfield Police Department K-9 Unit located him hiding in a trailer on the property. Velasquez was taken into custody without incident. A loaded handgun that had been discarded by Velasquez was located near the trailer.
A second suspect, 49 year old Kenneth Macklin, was detained as he attempted to drive from the area where Velasquez had first been seen with the handgun. During a search of the vehicle Macklin was driving, deputies located ammunition, suspected heroin, and burglary tools. It was later determined Macklin had driven Velasquez to the area and had attempted to drive away as deputies were arriving on scene.
Velasquez was arrested for felon in possession of ammunition, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm in public, and possession of paraphernalia. Macklin was arrested for felon in possession of ammunition, possession of heroin, transportation of heroin, and possession of burglary tools. Both Velasquez and Macklin were booked into the Sheriff’s Office Central Receiving Facility.
