UPDATE: On 01-30-17 members of the Janesville Fire Department, Janesville Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations Fire Marshall’s Office and the ATF (Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) conducted a search of 603 S. Main St in attempt to determine the cause and origin of the fatal fire reported on 01-29-17.

Janesville Police investigators along with personnel from the Rock County Medical Examiners Office also attended the autopsy of the deceased victim.

The preliminary results of the search of the residence and the autopsy did not indicate any signs of foul play. Toxicology tests on the victim are pending and the investigation is ongoing. The cause of death and the victim’s identity will be released by the Rock County Medical Examiners office.

The Janesville Police and Fire Departments responded to a residential fire at 603 S Main St at 8:00 pm. Several people were able to evacuate the residence however; one person was not able to escape. Janesville Firefighters located a deceased person.

Janesville Fire Investigators and the Janesville Police Department Detective Bureau are conducting a joint investigation with the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The investigation is in the early stages and no further information is available at this time. Future informational releases will be coordinated between the Janesville Police Department Detective Bureau and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s office.
