Press release issued by Alameda County Sheriff's Office regarding vehicle submerged in Alameda Creek.

PRESS RELEASE:

On Saturday, January 21, 2017 about 1130 hours, Alameda County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Niles Canyon Road (About 1/4 mile east of Palomares Rd) at the request of Dublin CHP to assist with a report of a vehicle crash into Alameda Creek. Initial reports indicate a solo driver went off the roadway and into the creek. The car is believed to be submerged in the creek and the driver is unaccounted for.

The current weather and water conditions in Alameda Creek are extreme. The water level is abnormally high due to excessive rain and the currents are very dangerous and unpredictable. These conditions have created a serious safety concern for first responders trying to locate the vehicle. It is unsafe for us to enter the water at this time. We are working with our state water resource agency to reduce the volume of water being released into the creek. We can't begin recovery until the water level and current subside.

ACSO is working this recovery effort with Dublin CHP, Fremont Fire, Fremont Police, Alameda County Fire and other state, county and city agencies. We are hoping to get search and rescue divers into the water to locate the vehicle as soon as possible.

We will continue to update the public and media on this recovery effort. As of right now, there is no recovery operation underway until conditions improve. Niles Canyon is currently closed due to an unrelated Rock and Mudslide. This has further hampered recovery efforts.

Out of respect to the family, we will not be releasing the name of the involved driver until we have more information. We have met with them and they are aware of the situation.

Once again, we will advise the public and media when recovery operations are safe to begin.

Fremont Fire and ACSO will lead the recovery operation.
