Crime Alert and Community Update Bulletin

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.

Notable Cases

The week was, dare I say, a fairly uneventful one, except unfortunately two of our officers (Nick McCarthy & Lucas Taylor) were injured while dealing with combative subjects.

On Tuesday, 01-03-17 at 1:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Evergreen Avenue and Brunswick Street on a report of an active physical fight and a person lying in the street. Officer Nick McCarthy arrived on scene and was attempting to detain a subject who was not complying with his orders to stop. Officer McCarthy stated on the police radio that the subject was resisting him, and other officers immediately arrived to assist. Officer McCarthy sustained a broken hand during the encounter. The subject, a 20-year old San Bruno resident, was arrested for battery against a police officer, resisting arrest and for battery against a person.

On Thursday, 01-05-17 at 6:40 p.m., Officer Grogan was dispatched to the area of the Chipotle Mexican Grill on a report of a naked male subject running around the shopping center. The officer located the subject, wearing ripped jeans from his waist to his knees. The subject spontaneously admitted to smoking methamphetamine. After Officer Grogan conducted tests to determine if the subject was under the influence, the officer arrested the 28-year old transient subject for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

On Sunday, 01-08-17 at 3:45 p.m., Officer Clinkscales was dispatched to 777 Southgate Avenue on a report of a subject refusing to leave the church. The reporting party said was at a baptism at the church when she noticed a male subject she did not recognize. The subject said he knew one of the family members. The reporting party didn’t question it at the time but felt something was not right. She said the subject went with the baptism party to a location where lunch was held and ate food with the group. After the reporting party realized no one in the party knew the subject, the reporting party called the police. Officer Clinkscales spoke to the subject who said he was at the church because he had been doing construction work there and was living there. The officer noticed the subject was unable to control the movement of his fingers and was blinking his eyes uncontrollably. Knowing that this is one of the signs of being under the influence, the officer asked the subject when he last used narcotics. The subject admitted to using methamphetamine a few days prior. After he conducted some tests to see whether the subject was under the influence, the officer determined the subject, a 27-year old transient, was indeed under the influence of a controlled substance and arrested him for the offense.

Robberies

There were two robberies during the past week.

On Tuesday, 01-03-17 at 12:25 p.m., when a loss prevention officer at Macy’s attempted to stop a female for stealing merchandise, the female sprayed the loss prevention officer in the face with pepper spray. The female was with a male subject, and they fled the store. Investigators are working on a lead to identify the subjects.

On Wednesday, 01-04-17 at 9:00 p.m., an unknown subject came into the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant and made an announcement asking if anyone owned a gray Lexus that was parked outside—stating the alarm was sounding and a window may be shattered. The vehicle owner, a waiter at the restaurant, stated he owned the vehicle and ran out to take a look. The owner said he noticed there were extensive fresh scratches to the entire driver’s side and then noticed a group of 6-10 Chinese male adults wearing black hoodies covering their heads started to approach him. The victim asked the group what was going on, and one of the males in the group told him to shut up. The victim said he was then grabbed from behind and pulled backwards onto the ground. The victim said the group immediately began punching and kicking his head and upper body and stated he was hit approximately 20 times over a span of one to two minutes. A passerby stopped to ask what the group was doing, and the group scattered in multiple directions. The victim, a 24-year old San Francisco resident, never lost consciousness but sustained a laceration to the right of his head, a sprain to his pinky finger and complained of back pain. When the victim stood up, he realized his cell phone was missing, as well as a device used to take orders at the restaurant. This investigation is continuing.

Nextdoor.com

Nextdoor.com is a free private social networking website for your neighborhood. This private network ensures that only those who live in your neighborhood can join; users must go through a verification process. Neighbors ask each other for business recommendations; help in locating missing pets; discuss relevant local government issues; or connect for other reasons. It is very easy to sign up, and I like the fact that the site verifies users by addresses, and it won’t allow people to access to a neighborhood if they don’t actually live there. Please note: the City of Daly City and/or the Police Department cannot see what residents post—we are only allowed to post information. There is also a mobile application, or you can have it sent to your email. Give it a try! www.nextdoor.com
