Advisory

HARD FREEZE

The National Weather Service has issued a hard freeze warning for the entire parish from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday.  A hard freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are likely.  These conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.

In preparing for the extreme cold, St. James Parish Utilities is asking water customers to voluntarily limit their water use during the day.  The water system is working diligently to maintain our normal supply of water.  Water use is expected to increase significantly overnight as many customers drip water to protect their pipes.

To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, pipes should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip very slowly.  As a reminder, only a slow trickle is needed to protect pipes that are exposed outdoors.  Water customers with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain their systems or cover any aboveground pipes to protect them from freezing.

Pets are also vulnerable to the extreme cold.  Keep pets indoors as much as possible.  If this is not possible, make sure outdoor pets have warm, dry shelter and provide sufficient food and fresh, unfrozen water.

Please stay warm and safe.  Thank you.
