Suspect Fights with Deputies after Kidnap of 7 y/o girl at Popular Restaurant, Attempts to Flee, Paramount
On Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at approximately 3:40 p.m. Lakewood Station deputies responded to Alondra Boulevard and Paramount Boulevard in Paramount regarding a disturbance at a popular fast food restaurant. Additional information received in the call for service stated a male, Black adult wearing a blue t-shirt and black shorts was arguing with customers.
When the first deputy arrived on scene, she saw two males fighting inside the restaurant. The deputy immediately requested additional deputies and a supervisor to quickly and safely resolve the disturbance.
In less than a minute, a second deputy arrived and both entered the restaurant. They quickly approached two civilians who were detaining a male Black adult, fitting the description of the suspect in the call. However, the suspect broke free and attempted to flee.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspect, a struggle ensued between the deputies and the suspect inside the busy restaurant. Seeing that the suspect was overpowering the deputies and refused to cooperate by complying with orders to stop fighting, the two civilians came to the deputies’ aide. The combatant suspect continued to fight, refused to comply with directions and in an effort to quickly and safely quell the disturbance, less than lethal force was used. The success of the use of the taser allowed the deputies to take the suspect into custody without any of the innocent patrons being injured. The suspect was then taken into custody with the assistance of arriving deputy personnel.
Several witnesses inside the restaurant were interviewed, including a grandmother who was dining with her daughter and two granddaughters, ages seven and three. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, without provocation, was talking loudly as he approached the family and grabbed food from their table. Fearing for their safety, the grandmother grabbed her grandchildren and moved them towards the business counter. The suspect walked towards them, snatched the seven year-old grandchild by the arm and pulled her away from the grandmother.
A 45 year-old employee and a customer quickly got in between the suspect and the family, allowing the family to get the child back before running to the back of the business to escape from the suspect. Visibly distraught, the grandmother and mother of the little girls pushed the child out of the drive through window to get her away from the suspect.
The suspect has been identified as 35 year-old Lorenzo Ray Traylor, a transient of Paramount.
The suspect is currently at a local hospital awaiting clearance for booking. He faces charges of Kidnapping, Battery on a Peace Officer and Burglary.
The investigation is on-going and there is no additional information available at this time.
