*Update* #LASD - Homicide Detectives Responding to Assist El Monte PD with OIS at Esto Av and Haverly Street, El Monte

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are assisting El Monte Police Department with investigating the circumstances that lead to an Officer-Involved Shooting. The incident occurred at Friday, December 23, 2016 at 9:35 p.m. at Fieldcrest Street and Esto Avenue, El Monte.

Detectives have learned that an El Monte Police Officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Valley Boulevard and Tyler Avenue, El Monte, last night for a Driving Under the Influence investigation. The vehicle, a midsized SUV, driven by a male Hispanic adult, refused to stop and a police pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle collided with another motorist. Ultimately, the suspect made his way over to the vicinity of Esto Avenue and Fieldcrest Street. The suspect vehicle stopped at the mouth of an intersection at Esto Avenue and Fieldcrest Street. El Monte Police officers exited their vehicles to approach the suspect vehicle to conduct a felony traffic stop. The suspect then drove into the cul-de-sac, turned around and drove towards the officers, who were standing outside their vehicles. An officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have learned there were three officers who discharged their weapons. None of the officers on scene were injured.

A forth officer was injured when that officer collided with another vehicle while responding to the pursuit. That officer was transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The motorist that was struck by the suspect vehicle, did not report any injuries. The vehicle that was struck when the officer was responding to the pursuit, sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital to be treated.
