OSBI Special Agents Investigating Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Burns Flat

The Washita County Sheriff’s Office requested OSBI investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting in Burns Flat by an Elk City police officer. Early this morning, the Elk City officer pulled over a vehicle with several people inside. While speaking to the people inside the car, the driver put the car in gear and drove off. The officer pursued the vehicle into Burns Flat. The Elk City officer performed a tactical vehicle intervention maneuver on the vehicle, causing it to stall. The driver ran from the vehicle. The Elk City officer ran after the man into a neighborhood. The officer caught up with the man as he was trying to get inside a home in the 400 block of Iroquois. The officer deployed his taser without success. The man turned toward the officer with a gun in his hand. The officer shot the man. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Numerous OSBI special agents are working the case, gathering information and evidence. Ultimately, the district attorney will determine if the shooting by the officer was justified.
