Felonious Assault/ Barricaded Gunman

On December 12, 2016 at 6:17 P.M., officers from the Norton Shores Police Department were dispatched to the 2400 block of Norcrest Dr, Norton Shores on a report of a domestic assault. Police central dispatch updated officers that the male half of the domestic now had a shotgun and was barricaded in his home. The male subject was seen by neighbors carrying the gun outside the home prior to the officers arriving.

Once on the scene, Officers found a 39 yr old female victim at a neighbor’s home. The victim claimed her husband hit her several times and threatened to kill her. The victim was able to flee the home and call the police from the neighbor’s home. She was treated for minor injuries from the assault.

Officers made contact with the 41 yr old male suspect by phone. Several threats were made by the suspect and he refused to come out of the home. Officers could observe the suspect through the windows of the home carrying a long gun. The Norton Shores Police Department surrounded and secured the exterior of the home. The neighborhood was put into lock down for the safety of the officers and the homeowners in the area. Norton Hills, Norcrest and Dunes Parkway were closed during this ten hour standoff.

The Michigan State Police was then called for assistance. The Michigan State Police Emergency Services Team and the Negotiations Team arrived to assist. The Muskegon County Prosecutors office authorized a warrant for the suspect for assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting and obstructing the police, and domestic violence.

Police negotiators from Norton Shores and the Michigan State Police spoke with the male suspect for ten hours by phone. The suspect then gave up peacefully at approximately 4:00 a.m. The suspect was then arrested and lodged at the Muskegon County jail. The name of the suspect will be withheld until after his arraignment. Officers kept the neighborhood secure in freezing temperatures throughout the standoff. The roadway was cleared and the neighborhood lock down was cleared at approximately 4:07 a.m.

The Norton Shores Police Department would like to thank the Michigan State Police for the professional resources provided during this emergency situation. We would also like to thank the patience of the citizens in the area who were unable to return to their homes for several hours. We are thankful for a peaceful resolution and will continue to investigate this felonious assault made against the victim.
