Driver Sent to Hospital after Crashing Semi Through Church

Delaware County – About 2 p.m. today Trooper Seth Painter was south bound on I-69 around the 248 mile marker when he saw vehicles pulling off onto the south shoulder.  As he slowed for those vehicles one of the drivers began pointing across the interstate to the north bound side.

Painter looked across to see a semi pulling a flatbed trailer that had just run through the Living Hope Church, located at 14300 CR 900 W, approximately 50 yards east of the interstate.  Painter crossed the interstate and found the driver of the semi, Daniel Castel, age 44 of Roseville, MI, was out of the truck with non-life threatening injuries.

Castel told investigators the last thing he remembered was choking on a cough drop as he drove north bound on I-69.  The semi, pulling a loaded flatbed trailer, ran through the interstate fence, across Delaware County Rd. 900 W and drove into the church on the south west corner.

The truck continued through the church exiting on the northwest side. Luckily, no one was in the church at the time. A four car crash with no injuries, investigated by Delaware County, occurred on I-69 north bound as people slowed to look at the scene.

Trooper Painter was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Jeff Zeiger, Sergeant Dave Clayton, Troopers Eric Perkins and Ron Huff, as well as Gaston Fire, Delaware County EMS and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.  The crash remains under investigation.
