*Update* #LASD Shooting Death Investigation, 12600 Blk of Long Beach Bl, Lynwood-Century Station

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of a 16 year-old girl who was returning from church with her family, an innocent bystander caught in the middle of what detectives believe to be a gang-related shooting.

On Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at approximately 9:34 p.m., Century Station deputies responded to a “gunshot victim” call at the 12600 block of Long Beach Boulevard in Lynwood. When they arrived, they found the 16 year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.  Although life saving measures were performed, the young girl succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have learned that the victim was riding in the back seat of her family’s vehicle with her little dog on her lap. As the victim’s mother drove east on Euclid Avenue approaching Long Beach Boulevard, also accompanied by her 18 year-old brother who sat in the front passenger seat, a possible car-to-car shooting or chase was approaching from behind, unbeknownst to them.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the intended “target vehicle” was trying to get away from the “suspect vehicle” but was caught in traffic at the light at Euclid Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. At this time, a male adult suspect exited the “suspect vehicle” and began shooting multiple rounds at the “target vehicle.”  One of the rounds struck the victim’s vehicle, entering through the back panel near the license plate, striking the victim from behind and into her upper torso, as she sat in the rear seat of her family’s vehicle.

The “suspect vehicle” then made a U-turn and fled the scene, west on Euclid Avenue and out of view.

The victim’s mother realized her daughter had been struck by gunfire and pulled over along Long Beach Boulevard, where paramedics were summoned and after treating the victim pronounced her dead.

The occupant or occupants of the intended “target vehicle” exited the vehicle and ran from the scene in an unknown direction, abandoning the burgundy-colored, Saturn sports utility vehicle (SUV) at the scene.  They have since not made their identity known.

At this time, there is no “suspect vehicle” description.  However, detectives believe that there is possibly more than one suspect involved in the crime.

It is unknown if the occupant or occupants of the intended “target vehicle” were injured.

The victim’s mother and brother were not injured, but their family pet, a small, white, poodle mix dog that sat on their daughters lap as they returned home from church ran out of the vehicle scared when the victim was struck by gunfire.  The scared little dog ran onto the street, was struck by on-coming traffic and died at the scene.

The weapon has not been recovered.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
