Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are continuing to assist Whittier Police Department personnel with an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Officer-Involved Shooting of an adult male that occurred at approximately 6:00 am on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 in the 13400 block of Penn Street, Whittier.
 
Detectives have learned that at approximately 6:00 am, a citizen called Whittier Police Department to report a suspicious man walking westbound on Penn Street, possibly holding a machete.  Officers responded to the location and contacted the man described in the call. 

During the contact with the man, described as a male Hispanic adult, the suspect threw a stick at one of the officers. The suspect ultimately lunged at another officer on scene, while holding the machete, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was struck multiple times.  Two Whittier Police officers fired their weapons.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately died of his injuries.

No officers on scene were injured as a result of the incident.

Homicide detectives have recovered the machete that the man was to have been armed with.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to the 13400 Block of Penn Street in the city of Whittier, to assist Whittier Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer involved hit-shooting.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital for treatment.  His condition is unknown at this time.

No officers were injured by gunfire.  
 
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
