 Chief Haddad invited to
Global Conference in Brussels
Department to present best practices for
community engagement, trust building

Dearborn, Mi --- Because of the department’s recognized success with community policing, Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad has been invited to speak at an international conference in Brussels focused on the exchange of ideas on security practices.

Dearborn was the only city and police department in America selected to participate.

Because the conference is taking place this week, Chief Haddad instead will stay in Dearborn to oversee national election functions, participate in high-level security meetings with corporate partners, attend an annual event honoring Dearborn service clubs, and participate in long-standing Veterans Day ceremonies.

Commander David Robinson will represent the Dearborn Police Department at the conference, which takes place at the Egmont Palace – Foreign Affairs Ministry.

“I am confident that Commander Robinson will provide masterful insights on our community policing and mental health intervention models in Brussels,” said Haddad.  “Our lessons learned have global value.”

This workshop will feature international homeland security subject matter experts, who will present operational models that are driven by community engagement and the essential building of trust.

Additionally, conference workshops will explore the specific ways and means through which government and police services facilitate and motivate the public for effective engagement in counterterrorism policies.

Paul Goldenberg, Homeland Security Council senior advisor, will moderate the lead panel entitled, “The Importance of Community Policing.”
“Mayor O’Reilly and Chief Haddad are recognized nationally and around the world as thought leaders for developing security measures that are dependent on community engagement and trust-building,” said Goldenberg. “Dearborn should be extremely proud of their efforts.”

Panel discussions from the Molenbeek Social Services, European Strategic Communications Network, and the United Kingdom Metropolitan Police are anticipated.  The audience will include prevention officers, federal police officials, municipal police officials, academics and researchers, and federal/municipal government officials from Belgium.

“It is indeed an honor that Dearborn was the only city in our nation selected to participate during these crucial times,” said O’Reilly.  “Chief Haddad and our police department have been at the forefront of shaping critical public policy regarding homeland security.”

John Farmer, professor and special advisor to the president at Rutgers University, will be a keynote speaker and will discuss specific ways to examine the challenges relating to radicalization, violent extremism and the prevention of terror attacks.

All presentations will be translated into French, Dutch, and English for all participants at this conference.
