Modesto, CA - Emergency medical personnel responded to the Stanislaus County Jail on 10-26-16 for an inmate who had a medical emergency. The inmate, 67 year-old Luis Cardenas of Modesto, was pronounced deceased at the Men's Jail located at 1115 H Street in Modesto, CA
Cardenas was booked into the county jail for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence by Modesto Police Department on 10-26-16 at 2:30 p.m. Prior to being booked at the county jail, Cardenas was transported to the emergency room by the arresting officers so he could be evaluated and cleared by a doctor for jail booking.
Cardenas was housed in the county jail by himself in a cell and deputies conducted hourly checks on him. He was last seen responsive at 8:30 p.m. and at approximately 9:30 p.m. Cardenas was found unresponsive. Deputies began life saving measures and called for AMR.
Emergency medical personnel arrived to the county jail and Cardenas was pronounced deceased at the scene. Sheriff's' Office homicide detectives responded to the county jail to investigate his death. There was no use of force by any deputies in the jail and his cause of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office.
