TPD alerts its citizens of online scams related to the swine flue outbreak.

Citizens,

In light of the growing world wide spread of swine flu, there are now several online "resources" and spam email campaigns circulating around that offer false information, ads for pharmaceuticals, computer viruses, or a combination of these. Consequently, I wanted to provide you with a few links to some trusted sources for information on this growing problem in an effort to keep you informed on the issue and prevent you from becoming a victim of individuals who are trying to use this serious situation for personal gain.

1. The Centers For Disease Control has established a web page that specifically addresses the current swine flu outbreak and it contains a lot of useful information: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

2. The World Heath Organization has a disease outbreak information page: http://www.who.int/csr/don/en/

3. HealthMap is a website that takes relevant news stories on the current outbreak and then plots them on a map to show where the stories - and most recent cases - are: http://healthmap.org/swineflu

4. The following link is just one news story that highlights the new problem of scams pertaining to the swine flu issue: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=3233

Health officials are reminding everyone that the best way to prevent infection is through the use of normal precautions to include frequent hand washing, avoid touching your eyes/nose/mouth, and covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. If you notice any symptoms of the flu, you are advised to seek medical attention asap.

You are also being asked to avoid work, school, and social events if you have any symptoms of this virus in order to reduce the possibility of contaminating the general populace.

In closing, please avoid any online postings or emails that do not come from a trusted source and stay tuned to regular media outlets and other trusted sources for up to date information on this issue. We will post more alerts on this system as the situation warrants.

Thanks
