Advisory

There have been several cell phone thefts and burglaries recently. EPD has safety tips for when you're home or away.

Recently there have been incidents which serve as a reminder that we need to be safe and aware of our surroundings. There have been a number of thefts of cell phones from pedestrians and yesterday a burglary that was interrupted by the resident. When the resident returned home they discovered objects had been moved around inside. The resident did not hear anyone initially and continued checking the residence. A burglar was still inside and confronted the resident. The burglar stole money and other items from the resident before fleeing. Thankfully no one was physically harmed during this incident.

The Emeryville Police Department would like to offer some suggestions to help you remain safe.

In the home:

-If you suspect someone has broken into your home, do not enter or remain inside. Exit immediately. Get a safe distance away and call 9-1-1.

-Deadbolt entry doors and secure windows when not at home.

-Consider using a safe deposit box for valuables.

-Record the serial numbers of your property and keep the log at a separate location. Photograph jewelry or other unique items to assist in locating and identifying your property.

When out walking:

-Be aware of your surroundings and who is near you. Keep your head up and walk with confidence.

-Avoid texting while walking. With your head down, you can't see obstacles or dangers.

-Avoid dark areas at night. Stick to well lit, populated areas. The best way to avoid being robbed in a dark alley is to not be in the dark alley.

-Don't walk alone when possible.

-Make sure someone knows where you are and when you're expected to return.

-Avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics. If someone asks to use your phone, decline politely and continue walking.

In your car:

-Do not leave valuables in view. Do not leave anything that looks like it could contain valuables in view. Thieves particularly love to steal luggage, backpacks and computer bags whether or not they have something inside.

-If you place your valuables in your trunk, do it before you leave home or stop somewhere along the way. Do not park, move valuables to your trunk and leave your car. You just made the criminal's job easier by showing them what they can steal.

Be aware. Be safe.
