INDIANAPOLIS - Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigate a tragic crash that killed a bicyclist on the south side of the city.
Just before 9:30 a.m. on 10/12/16, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were sent to the 8600 block of State Road 37 reference a crash that involved a truck and a bicyclist. When officers arrived, they found an unresponsive and unidentified female victim laying on the ground suffering from extensive visible injuries. EMS/Fire personnel arrived and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. The bicyclist has not yet been positively identified. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was not injured.
Preliminarily, accident investigators believe that the bicyclist was heading north on S.R. 37 in the shoulder lane when she was struck by a truck driven by 56-year-old David Fields of Indianapolis. The truck was also heading north on S.R. 37 at the time of the collision and likely left the roadway. Although investigators have not yet determined what caused the collision, they do not suspect impairment of alcohol was a contributing factor. The driver of the truck will be subject to a state-mandated blood draw to verify any presence of illegal intoxicants. The driver was not arrested and is cooperating with investigators in the investigation.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving. Distracted driving can increase the chance of a motor vehicle crash.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department would like to remind motorist not to drive distracted for any reason; it can wait. The life you save might be yours or that of another.
