Update to Fatal Traffic Collision on East Washington St. from October 8, 2016.

Summary:

On October 8, 2016 at 10:54PM a 42 year old Hispanic man was struck by a white Mercedes utility in the W/B number one lane of East Washington St. in front of the Petaluma Library. That man has been identified as Luis Alberto Picon-Estrada a 42 year old Petaluma resident. His identity was not originally released pending notification of family.

Picon-Estrada was crossing from the south side of East Washington St. to the north side. The Mercedes driven by  44 year old Scott Compton of Sebastopol was traveling in the W/B number one lane when Picon-Estrada crossed in front of him. Picon-Estrada sustained head trauma, and trauma to the right side of his body and was transported to Petaluma Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Details of an autopsy are pending. Compton was evaluated for DUI and placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

While alcohol is believed to be involved in this collision witnesses did not believe Compton was driving at an unsafe speed indicating Compton was traveling at a speed near the posted 30 MPH speed limit.

This collision remains under investigation by the Petaluma Police Dept. Traffic Unit. If anyone has additional information or witnessed the collision who has not been interviewed by police please contact Officer Matt Frick at 707-776-3720.
