*Update* #LASD Deputy-Involved Shooting 10000blk Firestone Blvd, Norwalk, Norwalk Station

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy involved shooting that occurred at approximately 9:09 am, in the 10000 block of Firestone Boulevard, Norwalk.

Detectives have learned that Norwalk Sheriff Station deputy personnel responded to the location for a 9-1-1 call regarding a person pointing a gun at cars coming off the 605 freeway at Firestone Boulevard.  Upon their arrival deputies saw a male, who matched the description of the person in the call, attempting to break into vehicles near local businesses.

The suspect began to walk westbound through the parking lot of the businesses, at which time, deputies see he is armed with a handgun.  The suspect approached Firestone Boulevard, just west of the 605 freeway, and deputies tried to stop the suspect from crossing the street.  As deputies attempted to stop the suspect, he put the gun to his own head as if he was going to shoot himself.

The suspect walked south through the parking lot, back towards the local businesses.  The deputies tried to detain him, and the suspect continued to point the gun at his head.  The suspect stopped on the sidewalk in front of a local business, and attempted to rack a round into the chamber of the gun.

Deputy personnel gave numerous commands to the suspect to drop the gun, at which time the suspect placed the gun to his head again.  The suspect then walked down the walkway towards the entrance of the local business.

Deputy personnel continued to follow the suspect to the entrance of the business, attempting to prevent him from going inside the business.  Deputies continued giving verbal commands to drop the gun.  The suspect then turned and pointed the gun at deputy personnel, at which time deputies fired multiple rounds, missing the suspect.

The suspect then ran between two cars in the parking lot, placing the gun to his head, and shot himself.  The deputies approached and found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.  The gun was lying directly next to the suspect.

The suspect’s gun, a semi-automatic pistol, was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was placed on life support.  The suspect ultimately succumbed to his self-inflicted injuries.

The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, 24-years of age.

The reason for the suspect’s actions is unknown at this time.

Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the wounding of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles. The Critical Incident Review panel convenes to perform a preliminary risk management analysis of the shooting. This panel is comprised of the concerned chief and unit commander, risk management and training personnel, the chairperson of the Executive Force Review Committee, and a representative from the Office of the Los Angeles County Counsel. Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there are any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns. The Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney also participates in the investigatory process and conducts a legal analysis of the shooting.
