Tomorrow is Walk to School Day - Drivers urged to exercise caution

The 20th Annual National Walk to School Day will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

A large number of Los Altos youth are expected to participate by walking and riding bikes to school. To help ensure the safety of all youth participating in Walk to School Day, the Los Altos Police Department is urging drivers to exercise extra caution during the morning and late afternoon commute hours.

  • Allow a bit of extra time in your morning and afternoon commute
  • Abide by all posted speed limits, especially near schools
  • When passing cyclists from behind, remember to provide 3-feet of clearance
  • Look out for crossing guards around most elementary schools who will be stopping traffic so children can safely cross the street

National Walk to School Day seeks to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment.
