INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Accident investigators are investigating a fatal accident involving a motocycle and another vehicle.
Just after 5 p.m. on 09/25/2016, officers with the IMPD were dispatched to the 7300 block of S Meridian St in reference to a serious accident involving a motorcylce. Responding officers located a critically injured male who had been riding a motorcylce. The male was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The occupants of the other involved vehicle were not harmed.
Accident investigators responded to the scene and conducted their investigation, which included interviewing witnesses. Investigators believe that the motorcyclist was south on Meridian St in the 7300 block, when a vehicle exiting a parking lot was turning left to go north on Meridian St. The motocyclist was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision and was thrown from his bike. Investigators do not believe alcohol played a factor in the accident, however, the driver of the other vehicle was taken to Eskenazi Hospital for a blood draw, as is standard procedure for accidents involving a fatality. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The name of the motorcyclist will be released once next-of-kin notification has been made and verified.
The IMPD would like to remind drivers to look out for motorcycles, as they can be more difficult to see on the road. It is also recommended that motorcyclist wear a helmet to help safeguard their lives, even though it is not required by Indiana State Law. We want everyone to make it home safely to their loved ones and it is up to each of us to do our part in observing traffic laws and looking out for other drivers.
