September 22nd is Senior Falls Prevention Awareness Day in Alaska

Governor Bill Walker has proclaimed Thursday, September 22nd, as Senior Falls Prevention Awareness Day in Alaska. A largely preventable community health problem, falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among Alaskans aged 65 years and older. In 2015 alone, falls in this age group accounted for approximately 36 deaths and 1,600 hospitalizations in Alaska. Governor Walker’s proclamation can be read in the attachment included with this release.

Fall prevention programs may be found online through a number of resources including:

The CDC’s Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries (STEADI) Program–includes brochures on fall prevention and physical exercise programs for the elderly. ( http://www.cdc.gov/steadi/patient.html )

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services’ Fall Prevention Program–includes fall prevention tips and public service announcements.  ( http://dhss.alaska.gov/acoa/Pages/falls/default.aspx )
