Please be aware of a scam in the area where the callers state they are friends or family of the recipient, and are being held by the Ingham County Sheriff's Office and claim they need money for to avoid major criminal charges.

In some cases it is possible for the number on the Caller ID to show 517-676-2431, which is the Sheriff's Office main number.

Residents should be aware that the Sheriff's Office does not make phone calls, send e-mails, or faxes to collect money for warrants, taxes or other Court costs. They CERTAINLY would never request any payment in gift cards.

Web sites and cell phone apps are available for scammers to disguise their real phone numbers, or to use numbers belonging to other parties, to pull off these types of scams.

If you receive one of these calls, please DO NOT send money, purchase gift cards, make wire transfers, or give out credit card information to the callers. Check https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/scam-alerts for more information.
