Statement from Brigantine OEM regarding TS Hermine

This is a special message from the Brigantine Office of Emergency Management.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for our area.

Beginning later today and continuing possibly through Tuesday, we can expect tropical storm force winds up to 65mph with extremely heavy rains. Moderate tidal flooding is expected starting with tomorrow morning’s high tide. Due to the sustained north east winds, the water is expected to back up in the bays and successive tides will be higher.

Being that the storm is still over land, there is much uncertainty as to the level of rain and flooding we will receive. There is the potential for Sandy and Jonas level flooding if the storm stays closer to the shoreline. At this time we are not calling for mandatory evacuations. Until a state of emergency is declared by the governor’s office, we are asking that residents in areas that were flooded during Jonas and Sandy, voluntarily evacuate. At a bare minimum, you should move your vehicles to high ground and secure all valuables from low lying parts of your property as well as securing all loose items outside your home.

Again, we are not calling for mandatory evacuations but if you were flooded during Sandy and Jonas, you are being asked to voluntarily evacuate today or tomorrow morning after high tide at the latest. The weather can and will quickly degenerate once it approaches our area and it may be too late. If the governor's office declares a state of emergency and orders evacuations, a separate message will be sent.

Also, at this time we have no plans to open the emergency shelter. If it is opened during the storm, it will be a shelter of last resort only. Very little in the way of comfort items, it will simply be a place to get out of the storm.

Please do not call 911 or 266-7414 unless you have a Police/Fire/Medical need. Our dispatchers will not have flooding or road closure information.

Thank you.
