Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer- involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at 2:01 p.m. in the 2400 block of East 57th Street, Huntington Park.

Homicide detectives have learned that Huntington Park Police Department personnel received a call for service regarding a work crew attempting to clear railroad tracks, but a homeless person was refusing to leave.

When Huntington Park officers arrived, they encountered a 35-40 year-old male Hispanic who had armed himself with rocks. The officers deployed less lethal (Taser) in order to take the suspect into custody. As the first officer attempted to handcuff the suspect, the suspect picked up a five foot led pipe. Fearing for his partner’s life, the second officer fired his duty weapon striking the suspect. 

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the suspect will be made by the Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are en route to the 2400 Block of East 57th Street, Huntington Park, to assist Huntington Park Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an Officer Involved (hit) shooting.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where his condition is unknown.
