Valdez Police & Fire responded to report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Valdez Glacier Campground Friday

Valdez, AK – Valdez Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Valdez Glacier Campground Friday morning.
At approximately 8:08 a.m. Friday, Valdez Police and Fire Dispatch received a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Valdez Glacier Campground off Airport Road. Emergency medical personnel and multiple police officers responded to the scene and found a 61-year old male unresponsive at his camp site.
Responders attempted advanced life support measures; however the man was declared deceased at the scene and transported by ambulance to Providence Valdez Medical Center.
Valdez police officers conducted a preliminary death investigation and found no indication of foul play. The State of Alaska Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy. The firearm used at the scene was recovered by Valdez police.
The name of the deceased is withheld pending next of kin notification.
