As summer comes to a close and the school year begins we would like to remind everyone to keep an extra eye out for children while driving especially around schools.

We also want to remind residents to lock your vehicles and remove the valuables inside. We have recently seen an increase in the number of burglary to motor vehicle incidents for this year and we have found that in most of these burglaries cars were left unlocked.

The Frankfort Police Department reminds citizens to take extra precautions to reduce opportunistic vehicle burglaries. You can do your part by following these tips:

•Remove valuables such as electronics, credit/debit cards, wallets, GPS units, purses, and cellular phones.

•If you cannot remove valuable items, keep them out of plain view. Use parts of the vehicle not as commonly burglarized such as the trunk or similar compartments less likely to be found.

•Make it a habit to lock your doors each time you leave your vehicle, including while you are at home. Most vehicle burglaries happen in residential areas. 88% of our burglary to motor vehicles involve vehicles that were left open.

•Close your windows or convertible tops.

Remember to lock your vehicles even if you are leaving it unattended for a short period of time. Some examples of vulnerable locations include:
• School or daycare drop offs
• Parks
• Sporting events
• Places of worship
• Fitness facilities
• Shopping centers

We also would like to remind you that Fall Festival is just around the corner. During this event on Labor Day weekend many roads in the downtown area will have restricted access which requires a Village of Frankfort vehicle sticker; other roads may also be closed for the weekend. Please plan for this and increased traffic.
