On Tuesday, May 3, 2016, Industry Sheriff’s Station Deputy Marianne Oliver responded to a call for service to assist 13-year-old Julian Cardenas. When she met with him, she learned that back in February, Julian experienced an unusual bout of severe back pain. Julian was examined by doctors and diagnosed with leukemia.
Although he is on a path to wellness by undergoing treatment, Deputy Oliver learned Julian felt dejected and was struggling emotionally because he is limited in participating in play activities with others kids; skateboarding, bicycle riding or even attending school regularly is difficult while his immune system and general health are in repair. This is exceptionally frustrating for Julian because he is quite fond of learning and would like to become an engineer one day.
Moved by Julian’s circumstances, Deputy Oliver felt a need to do something more than just handling a regular call for service. As she drove back to the station, the story of Julian weighed heavily on her heart. When the deputy returned, she shared the story with coworkers who immediately came up with a plan to perk Julian up: They decided to make him their station’s honorary Deputy for A Day!
On Wednesday, July 20, 2016, Julian will participate in a day chock-full of activities and surprises! The deputies worked hard to coordinate a fun-filled day that, hopefully, he will remember for a long time.
With Julian’s parents in on the surprise, Deputy Oliver will pick him up in a custom LASD Camaro show car, drive him to Industry Station at 8:30 a.m., and have him sworn in by Acting Assistant Sheriff Anthony La Berge.
Julian will receive a tour of the station, participate in training in the weapons training simulator, and spend time with the Special Enforcement Bureau Special Weapons Team, K-9 and Aero Bureau deputies.
So Julian could have some tokens to remind him of his special day in a law enforcement, different LASD departments donated a collection of souvenirs and challenge coins. The challenge coins and Department hats and t-shirts will be presented to Julian to give him support.
Industry Station personnel will host a barbecue fundraiser that day, with all the proceeds going to Julian and his family. As his condition improves, Industry Station personnel hope to have him join next year’s Camp Courage, an exclusive camping experience hosted by the Industry Sheriff’s Youth Activities League.
