Advisory

Car/Motorcycle safety information and regulations

With the coming of Rebel Road in Muskegon, The Muskegon Public Safety Office would like to take a moment to mention a few issues to keep everyone safe and having a good time.

• Helmets - While Michigan law currently allows motorcycle riders to not wear a helmet if they meet certain criteria, the Muskegon Public Safety Office highly recommends wearing a helmet while riding. Our concern is both for the rider who could be critically or fatally injured in the event of an accident and also for the family and friends who have to deal with the aftermath.

• License Endorsement - The Muskegon Public Safety Office takes the issue of having a motorcycle endorsement on your license very seriously and does and will issue citations for those riding without the proper endorsement on their license.

• Noise Issues – While riding through residential areas within the City of Muskegon, bikers are reminded that the City of Muskegon does have a noise ordinance. This is a quality of life issue for our residents. We do know that many times motorcyclists visit the beach area to view the sunset after the day’s events and that is indeed a beautiful sight to behold, but we would ask that people are mindful of the ordinance and take major streets out to those areas rather than driving through residential neighborhoods past 11 p.m. We would also ask bikers to curtail unnecessary revving of engines when away from the venue and out in the residential areas in the late evening hours.

Please note that loud muffler noise is also a violation of the motor vehicle code. See section 257.707 of the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code for more information.

• Traffic Safety – Remember that motorcycles and cars both share the road and both must follow the same traffic regulations. For those who are driving cars, please note that there will be additional motorcycle traffic this week. Be mindful of blind spots and remember that the motorcycles are to utilize the traffic lanes in the same manner as cars.

We wish for everyone to enjoy the weather, music, food, fellowship and viewing of the bikes. Let’s keep it safe and enjoyable for everyone.
