RPD Burglary Safety Message-

Riverside Residents

This week Riverside Police officers arrested a 21 year-old Cicero resident for burglary to motor vehicle; he was burglarizing unlocked vehicles in residential neighborhoods between the hours of 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. specifically.

I believe this is a good time to remind residents to lock parked vehicles and close garage doors when not in use.

In this case, the defendant gave a written statement and confession stating that he walked from driveway to driveway in Riverside trying car door handles until he found a car unlocked that he could burglarize (taking change and U.S. currency). If cars were locked, he would go to the next driveway and so on until he found another one unlocked. He walked between 25-40 homes during three weeks stealing from residents' cars. He told investigators he looked for the least resistance possible – so if a car was locked, he just moved on to the next home.

Any amount of deterrent you can provide against those who commit property crimes will decrease the likelihood of you being a victim.

Turn on outside lighting at night, close and lock garage doors when not in use, lock your parked vehicles and report all suspicious activity or vehicles in your area.

In this arrest an alert resident gave us video and copied down a temporary license plate which led investigators to the offender and only then were we able to stop this burglary pattern.

This arrest would not have been possible without the direct assistance from an alert Riverside resident who reported the suspicious activity - and for that we are appreciative.
