Farmington Hills Issues Temporary Ban on Fireworks

Due to the elevated fire risk in southeast Michigan, Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh has issued a temporary ban on the use of fireworks and open burning in the City.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued an “Extreme Fire Danger” alert for all of southeast Michigan, including the City of Farmington Hills. Taking the MDNR’s alert seriously, Fire Chief Unruh has advised that, with the current dry conditions, the possibility of a fire being ignited by the use of fireworks or open burns is very high and creates an emergency condition that is dangerous to residents and property in the City. As a result, Chief Unruh and the City are taking steps to help protect residents and their property.

Looking to the authority provided to him under the Michigan Fire Prevention Code, Chief Unruh has declared that, effective immediately, the use or discharge of consumer fireworks, low-impact fireworks (including sparklers), novelty fireworks, and open burning in all areas of the City of Farmington Hills is prohibited until the impending fire danger has been eliminated and conditions have been determined safe.
