UPDATE #LASD Det. Investigate an Attempt Murder on Two Deps Struck by Gunfire, 16600 Blk Lisa Ave, Bellflower

 

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred in the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue, Bellflower, at 10:49 PM, on Thursday, June 23, 2016

 

The first deputy who was in surgery earlier today is now currently out of surgery and his condition is critical but stable.

 

The second deputy injured is awaiting surgery and is listed in fair condition.

 

The suspect was arrested at a home in the 9000 block of Mayne Street, Bellflower after entering the residence and holding an adult male victim hostage.  

 

The hostage was able to escape and was unharmed.

 

Special Enforcement Bureau personnel introduced tear gas into the residence which caused the suspect to surrender to deputies without incident.

 

The suspect was not injured as a result of this incident. 

 

The suspect is identified as 39-year-old, Juan Martinez, booking #4703469. He was arrested on multiple charges of attempted murder on a peace officer and kidnapping of a civilian.

 

Suspect Martinez is being held in the Los Angeles County Jail system in lieu of $10,000,000 bail.

UNIT:                   Homicide Bureau – Lieutenant Mendoza

 

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding an attempt murder of Lakewood Station deputies that left two deputies injured. The incident occurred in the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue, Bellflower, on Thursday, June 23, 2016, at approximately 10:49 PM.

Detectives have learned that deputies were conducting a DUI checkpoint on Lakewood Boulevard when they attempted to conduct a vehicle code enforcement stop.  The vehicle was followed by a motorcycle deputy, at which time the vehicle came to a stop on the 16600 block of Lisa Avenue. The driver stepped out of the vehicle, produced a firearm, and fired several rounds at the deputy striking him multiple times. The deputy returned fire and the suspect fled on foot.  


The suspect continued his assault, by firing several rounds at the responding deputies, striking one of them with gunfire.


The suspect once again fled on foot and fired at a third group of deputies.  The deputies returned fire, but the suspect fled the area in an unknown direction and out of view. It is unknown if the suspect was struck by the deputy gunfire.

The area was immediately contained and a search of the area is being conducted at this time. Deputies from the Special Enforcement Bureau are actively searching for the outstanding suspect.

Both deputies were transported to a local hospital where they are being prepared to undergo surgery. Their condition is fair at this time.


The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. The Sheriff’s Department is asking the public to stay away from the area until it is safe.

The suspect is described as a male adult.
