EMA Prepares for Potential of Severe Weather Overnight

The Madison County Emergency Management & Department of Homeland Security Agency is monitoring the threat of severe weather over night.  Weather models show a line of intense storms moving thru Northern and Central Indiana late tonight.  At this time, it appears severe weather will consist of heavy rain, lightening, possibly hail and very strong winds between 50 MPH-70 MPH for 15 - 20 minutes.   We cannot rule out the threat of a possible tornado as well.  These storms potentially will cause wide spread damage and power outages.

In advance of the storms, we encourage all residents to charge cellular devices, and make sure your emergency supply kits are stocked and ready to use if needed.  Be sure to check batteries in your flashlights, and AM/FM radio in case of a power outage.  Another tip which can be helpful is to have medication set aside with your disaster supply kit.

In advance of the storms, EMA has 20-30 trained weather spotters on standby ready to go out to designated locations in the county to provide live weather observations which can be relayed to the National Weather Service.   In addition, the Field Support Team has volunteers ready to respond to power outages for traffic control or road closures due to down power lines.  Members of the EMA Warning Division have been closely monitoring weather developments throughout the day and have reported that storms are pushing SE from the Chicago, IL metro area.

As residents go to bed tonight, have a plan how you will receive weather warnings during the night hours.  If you do not have an All Hazard Alert Radio capable of receiving warnings from the National Weather Service, these radios can be picked up at Wal-mart, K-mart, Radio Shack and many other retail establishments in your community.   In addition to an alert radio, citizens may text MADISONCOEMA to 888-777 to receive FREE alerts from EMA.
