Early Friday morning, Valdez Fire & Police Depts. responded to a fire involving two homes in Valdez Mobile Home Park

For immediate release: 06/17/2016 10:30 a.m.

Valdez, AK – Valdez Fire Department responded to reports of a trailer fire in Valdez Mobile Home Park early Friday morning.

At approximately 4:10 a.m. Friday, Valdez Fire and Police Dispatch received multiple reports of a trailer fire in Valdez Mobile Home Park. Valdez police officers arrived on scene at approximately 4:15 a.m. and found two mobile homes in spaces 167 and 168 engulfed in flames. Fire department engines arrived on scene at approximately 4:21 a.m. and began work to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters verified all occupants of the trailer in space 168 safely evacuated prior to first responder arrival. Valdez emergency medical technicians treated three adults and two children at the scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns. An adult neighbor who helped evacuate the trailer’s occupants was also treated on scene. All four adults and two children were transported by ambulance to Providence Valdez Medical Center for further treatment.

The trailer in space 167 was searched and determined to be unoccupied. Valdez police officers transported two canines who escaped the trailer to the Valdez Animal Shelter. Neither dog sustained apparent injuries from the incident. The dogs’ owner has been notified.

Responders discovered a young canine deceased inside the trailer in space 168. An additional black and white adult male Malamute is currently missing. Anyone with information regarding the location of the missing dog is encouraged to contact Valdez Police Dispatch at (907) 835-4560.

At approximately 5:50 a.m. Fire Department personnel deemed the fire under control and began overhaul efforts. Both trailers involved in the incident were determined to be uninhabitable. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

City officials contacted the American Red Cross to provide assistance for those displaced by the incident. The Bags of Love program provided two large comfort care packages for the children involved. The Valdez Chapter of Alaska State Firefighters Association also provides monetary assistance to individuals whose homes are lost during a fire.

UPDATE 06/17/2016 11:07 a.m.: The missing adult male Malamute has been located. He is safe and in the care of his owner’s neighbors.
