UPDATE #LASD Homicide Detectives Investigate Death of Adult Female and Small Child, 300 Blk W 124th St, Los Angeles

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman and child that occurred in the 300 block of West 124^th Street, Los Angeles, on Thursday, June 16, 2016, at approximately 9:43 PM.

Detectives have learned that deputies responded to a call of a car on fire at Athens Park. When they arrived at the park they found an SUV type car fully engulfed in flames. The Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived and put the fire out. Upon doing so it was discovered that there were two persons inside the vehicle.

According to people who were in the park, an adult female was standing near the car with a small child. They described the child as 3-4 years old. As the car was burning the woman kept getting in and out of the car. At one point the woman placed the child into the burning car and then she climbed into the car as well. People in the park yelled for her to get out of the car, but she ignored them. The adult woman and child were quickly overcome by the flames and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Detectives and Arson Investigators are continuing their investigation into why the woman wanted to kill herself and the child, and how the fire started. Investigators along with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner are also in the process of trying to identify the adult and child.

The investigation is on-going.
